INDUSTRIAL POND LINERS

Pond-liner.biz is designed to answer your basic how to questions about calculating the size of a general purpose industrial liner or geomembrane (an impermeable synthetic sheet which blocks the migration of fluid through rock and soil), and offers some beginning installation information.

There are a multitude of uses for a liner, from small residential applications such as decorative yard ponds for architectural enhancement, to industrial oil field liners, waste water liners, pit liners and irrigation pond liners.

Here are a few examples of panel sizes we can provide you according to material  thickness.

12 mil - 140,000 SF

16 mil - 120,000 SF

20 mil - 90,000 SF

24 mil - 80,000 SF

30 mil - 70,000 SF

Once you determine the purpose for your liner, you need to determind if there are any Local, State or Federal guidelines or regulations for your application. This will help determine the material to be used.

Liner material comes in a variety of thicknesses and types:

˙      CWP (coated woven polyethylene) liner material is extremely flexible in low temperatures and is UV resistant for short term exposure. Typically this material is used for landfill and stockpile covers; and is extremely useful for seepage control for irrigation canals and water containment ponds. Available in 12, 16, 20, 24 and 30 mil thicknesses.

˙      LLDPE (low density polyethylene) liner material is perfect for most general containment and cover applications. It is flexible, UV stable, chemical resistant and typically used for landfills, small exposed ponds, and waste water containment. Geomembrane available in 30 or 40 mil thicknesses.

˙      HDPE (high density polyethylene) liner material is generally used where long term exposure is an issue. Typically it is used in the oil and gas industries. Available in 20 mil thickness.

How do you determine the size of your pond liner?

First ask yourself the following questions:

What is the width and length of the pond?  This can be on a straight line from top of slope to top of slope OR it can be an actual measurement down the slope across the base and back up the other side.

What is the depth of the pond?

How steep and long are the slopes?

What is the pond being used for?  Our material is NOT fish grade or food grade.

How long do you want the liner to last?

Will there be fencing to protect the liner from animals?

 Have you installed liners before?

Will there be pipe penetrations and if so, how many?

What will be contained within the liner system, chemicals or water or other?

Will the pond remain full all year or will it be drained?

What is the sub grade made from? Sand, clay, etc?

If more than one panel is required, how will the field seams be made?  We do NOT do installations, but we can offer consulting services

How to Calculate Pond Liner Size

-          In order to accurately determine the size of your liner we require at minimum the dimensions listed in the drawing above. Pond depth, slope length, base length and width, overall length and width. The more information we have the better.

-     We can help you determine the set back dimension. At minimum the set back should be no less than 12 inches. If the sub-grade soil is soft or crumbles, a greater set back is required to prevent the anchor trench from caving in. Generally speaking a 36 inch set back is the most that is required for the type of liners we provide.

-     Every pond must have an anchor trench to prevent the liner from sliding down the slope and into the pond. We recommend no less than a 12 inch wide and 12 inch deep anchor trench. The deeper the pond the larger the anchor trench.

-     All liners have some degree of expansion and contraction as the ambient temperature changes from summer to winter and back to summer.  Therefore liners must be installed with some slack ripples. A liner that is installed tight, without these slack ripples can trampoline in the base and corners which in turn can create liner failure. A liner installed in a colder climate or in a cooler time of day will require more slack ripples. Call for more details on how to calculate this requirement.

HINT: Always allow extra liner for “slack management,” and to avoid shortages due to miscalculations.

More about Liners

Each liner can be rolled to your exact specifications for ease of installation. Typically a liner would be accordion or fan folded in one direction, and rolled in the other direction.  Each panel is then wrapped for shipment and storage, the liner dimensions and directional arrows for unfolding are clearly marked on the outer

Installation:

Place the liner near the corner of your pit and unroll the length (or width) of the hole based upon the directional arrow and dimensions marked on the liners protective outer cover. Be sure to adjust placement at the corner to allow for the amount of overhang required to backfill or secure the liners edges in the anchor trench when in place.

Once the liner is unrolled, pull the top leading edge of the accordion folded liner and it will unfold as it is pulled into place. Large liners may require several people spaced 15’ apart in order to pull the liner into position.
